Nii ehitatigi laevade Hiiu madala eest hoiatamiseks Kõpu tuletorn. Tuletorn ehitati 67 meetri kõrgusele üle merepinna Hiiumaa kõrgeimasse punkti. Tuletorni kõrgus maapinnast on 36 meetrit ja tuli on merepinnast 102,6 meetri kõrgusel, millest kõrgemal majakatulesid Läänemere ääres ei ole.
